Abstract
Purpose: Hardness of lens nucleus was measured in order to estimate the force needed for phacoemulsification and application toward the development of a new surgical technique.

Methods: In this experiment, 35 cases were obtained from extracapsular cataract extraction surgery at the Seoul National University Hospital between March 2008 and June 2009. The lens nuclear hardness is measured by using a microindentation instrument. The values in HSV color system were used to represent the degree of the opacification. To obtain the precise value, pictures of the lens nucleuses were taken by a digital camera.

Results: Due to deformation, 15 among 35 samples could not be tested. The hardness of each lens nucleus and the value of each lens nucleus had linear correlation (R2=0.56, p£¼0.05).

Conclusions: It is found that as the lens nuclear color is darker, the lens nucleus is harder. This relationship can be used to determine an adequate surgery process based on the lens nuclear color.
